Founded in 1988, Youth Music Monterey (YMMC) has dedicated over three decades to nurturing musical excellence and community engagement through youth orchestras and educational programs. Our organization merges the Youth Orchestra of Monterey County (established 1981) and Summer Music Monterey (established 1965), creating a legacy of musical education and performance. Under the leadership of professional conductors and educators, we offer structured programs including the Junior Youth Orchestra, Honors Orchestra, and specialized chamber ensembles that challenge students with symphonic literature while fostering technical and artistic growth.Our South County Strings initiative provides free string instruction to rural communities, and the Orchestra in the Schools program introduces instrumental music to students in grades 3-8. Services
Junior Youth Orchestra
This program trains students aged 7+ in intermediate orchestral repertoire through weekly rehearsals. Participants develop technical skills and musical artistry while preparing for advanced orchestral performance. The ensemble performs at Sunset Center concerts and provides opportunities for concerto competitions.
Honors Orchestra
For advanced musicians up to age 20, this ensemble performs full symphonic scores with professional-level training. Members receive sectional coachings and masterclasses while preparing for three annual concerts at Sunset Center. Participants may compete in concerto competitions for solo performance opportunities.
South County Strings
This initiative provides free violin, viola, and cello instruction to students in rural south Monterey County. Partnering with local school districts, the program offers group lessons during school hours and low-cost instrument rentals to students in grades 3-8.
Orchestra in the Schools
This after-school program introduces instrumental music to beginners in grades 3-8. Students receive 27 two-hour sessions annually, learning orchestral instruments and participating in two concerts at All Saints Day School. No prior experience is required for enrollment.
Chamber Players
This advanced chamber music program offers mentorship through masterclasses with world-class artists. Participants perform community benefit concerts and receive professional-level training in small ensemble settings, focusing on classical repertoire and collaborative performance skills.
