Our Story

Music 6000's journey began in 1962 with the musical talent of Johnny Lewis. Performing at the Seattle World's Fair and the Tyee Motor Inn, Johnny's passion for music extended beyond the stage. Recognizing the need for quality music education in the growing community, he began teaching lessons at Lacey Music Center, a store owned by the Torrence family on Pacific Avenue. This experience solidified Johnny's desire to build a dedicated space where musicians of all levels could find everything they needed to pursue their musical dreams.

In 1966, Johnny took a leap of faith and purchased Lacey Music Center, acquiring not only the store itself but also the adjacent old church and nine sprawling acres bordering Carpenter Road. This acquisition marked the beginning of Music 6000's physical transformation, with the church later becoming the shop's vibrant home. Johnny's vision expanded when he met Ruth Brown in 1969. Along with Ruth's four children, Steve, Jeff, Tracey, and Dana, the store began to buzz with even more energy.

The Lewis family officially united in 1973 with Johnny and Ruth's marriage, solidifying their commitment to building a musical haven together. By 1977, Music 6000 had found its current location, settling into the old church at 6000 Pacific Avenue. This marked a significant turning point, establishing a haven for musicians to connect, learn, and grow.

Expanding Our Horizons

The following years were instrumental in Music 6000's growth. Brothers Jeff and Steve stepped into leadership roles, entrusted with the daily operations of the ever-growing store. This expansion wasn't just about physical space; it was about building a dedicated team who shared the Lewis family's passion for music. Early employees like Mark Eckert, Perri Jenkins, and Dave Broyles became key figures in shaping Music 6000's reputation for exceptional service and expertise.

As the demand for music increased, so did the need for a larger space. In 1990, the nine acres were sold to Albertsons, allowing the Lewis family to purchase a new building at 2921 Pacific Avenue, further expanding their musical offerings. Finally, in 2006, Music 6000 moved to its current location at 3738 Pacific Avenue, doubling its previous floor space. This move solidified their commitment to providing the most comprehensive selection of musical instruments and equipment in the region.
