LAAPA's Mandeville Campus is one of three locations of the Louisiana Academy of Performing Arts. Originally founded on the Northshore in the early 90's, LAAPA has brought the joy of music, dance, and theater to thousands of students in St. Tammany Parish. The number one goal of our instructors is to instill a lifelong love of and appreciation for the performing arts through inspirational and progressive lesson planning. Seeing our students grow as musicians and dancers during our various performance opportunities each year is our greatest reward!

Our students have access to the largest variety of performing arts programs under one roof right here in Mandeville! Whether you're brand new to music, dance, acting, the performing arts, or already experienced, we know you'll feel right at home at our school. In addition to being master educators, musicians, and dancers, all of our instructors are extremely approachable, down to earth, and friendly. Our faculty work with children and adults of all levels, from brand new beginners to advanced students. Your teacher will take the time to get to know your personal goals and interests and will customize a weekly plan to meet those goals!

Piano Lessons
Our piano program offers instruction in classical, jazz, and contemporary styles for ages 5+. Students learn technique, music theory, and performance skills using acoustic and digital pianos. Instructors tailor lessons to individual goals, from casual playing to competition preparation. The visual nature of piano makes it ideal for understanding music fundamentals that transfer to other instruments.
Ballet Classes
Ballet instruction follows the Cecchetti method for ages 4+. Classes focus on proper alignment, core vocabulary, and classical positions with progressive levels. Students prepare for pointe work at appropriate ages and perform in annual recitals. The foundation in ballet technique benefits all dance styles while building strength, flexibility, and grace through structured, age-appropriate training.
Voice Training
Voice lessons develop proper breathing techniques and vocal health for ages 5+. Children focus on fun repertoire while adults study classical, Broadway, or contemporary styles. Instructors emphasize healthy vocal production to prevent strain, with options for performance preparation and audition coaching. Specialized vocal coaching available for intensive training needs.
Acting Workshops
Acting classes teach stage presence and storytelling through Meisner and Stanislavski techniques. Students explore character development, scene study, and script analysis in leveled classes for ages 7+. Performance opportunities include fall and summer productions with roles matched to skill levels, plus advanced college-prep options for serious actors.
Summer Camps
Our summer camps provide immersive experiences in music, dance, and drama for ages 5-16. Campers explore multiple disciplines through instrument exploration, choreography, and theater workshops culminating in final performances. The programs combine technical instruction with creative play in a supportive environment that builds skills and confidence over 6-8 week sessions.

Director Emeritus
Founder of LAAPA in 1978, Wanda Cullen established the academy's commitment to accessible arts education. Her vision created three campus locations and a faculty of 60+ instructors. She continues to influence curriculum development while mentoring new generations of performing arts educators.
Dr. Vera
Piano Instructor
Doctorate-level piano educator specializing in classical and contemporary techniques. Dr. Vera tailors lessons to individual learning styles while emphasizing music theory fundamentals. Dance Teacher

Questions
What age can children start music lessons?
Piano and voice lessons begin at age 5, guitar at 7, and violin at 4. Toddler music classes start at 18 months through parent-tot programs focusing on rhythm and basic instrument exploration.
Do you offer dance classes for adults?
Yes, we provide adult ballet, tap, hip-hop, and contemporary classes for beginners through advanced students with flexible scheduling options for working professionals.
Are performances mandatory for dance students?
Stage performances are strongly encouraged but not required. Our June recital and December showcase allow students to demonstrate progress while maintaining low-pressure educational focus.
What qualifications do your instructors have?
All faculty hold university degrees in their specialty or have equivalent professional experience. Dance instructors have university training, while music teachers include industry professionals with performance backgrounds.
Can I try a class before enrolling?

Our experience at Mandeville School of Music and Dance has been wonderful. My daughters take guitar and piano lessons with Mr. James.we had to change our schedule but could not change our teacher. They insist that Mr. James is always their teacher! Hes great with both of my girls ages 9 and 11. Definitely recommend him for beginners! Hes the best!!!

Have experience playing but always wanted to finally understand the concepts and terms of music theory. Found the perfect instructor Ryan Tingle. Ryan has in depth solid knowledge of theory with broad professional practical experience across multiple instruments. At lot of basic didactics at the keyboard plus we work through pieces of music and discuss what's happening - meters, chord types and progressions, harmonic progressions (including physics lessons), scale modes, etc.

Never quite know what we're going to discuss at a lesson, spent 45 minutes discussing electric guitar effects one evening, but it's always immersive and intellectually rewarding. I may even get around to learning how to play better but that can wait.

I loved my time here at LAAPA! I was a piano student at LAAPA for 10 years and was with Dr. Vera for 7 of those years. She was an amazing teacher! She was always so kind and compassionate and I truly enjoyed getting to take her class. She not only taught me piano and music skills, but she also took the time to get to know me which made my time so much more enjoyable. I highly recommend!

Dr. Vera has been my piano teacher for about eight years now and she is the sweetest, most understanding teacher Ive had! She always helps me with my music sheets when Im struggling, and shes very patient when I try to fix my mistakes. I really like her suggestions for potential songs to learn. I am an adult taking piano. Mr. Carter is very patient and explains when and why I dont get my rhythm down correctly. I have been playing at the recitals, and although I get very nervous, it is good for me to play for people other than my husband.

My 8-year-old son has been attending LAAPA, and I truly cant say enough good things about this dance company. From day one, the experience has been nothing short of wonderful. The teachers are not only incredibly talented but also so patient, encouraging, and passionate about what they do. Theyve created such a positive and inspiring environment where my son feels supported and excited to learn. Its amazing to see his confidence and skills grow each week. My son took violin lessons with Mr.Riccardo who was always professional, courteous, and an overall excellent teacher. He was able to teach my son in a manner that was easy for him to understand violin posture, fingers, and reading music. My son felt confident yet challenged and always looked forward to his lessons.

My 6 year old son started drum lessons with Mr. James a few months ago. Each week he looks forward to his lesson to see what they will be learning next. Mr. James is very kind, patient and encouraging. Although its only been a few months I can see my sons growth as well as his passion for drums growing. I am so glad to have started this musical journey with LAAPA!

There isn't a single negative thing to be said about LAAPA. The staff are so friendly and helpful. My daughter has been taking piano lessons for two months with Mr. Ryan Kintz. She adores her lessons; Mr. Kintz is very patient and knows how to keep my daughter engaged in the lessons. Her favorite part is at the end of the lesson when they play duets - she on the piano and he on the guitar.

Jennifer has been working with me for over a month and I have been so happy with my lessons! We have been absolutely thrilled with LAAPA since my daughter started taking in January. She takes piano with Carolyn Russell who is an amazing teacher and coach. Because of Carolyn, my daughter has excelled at piano. She also takes saxophone with Morris who has also been amazing and she has also excelled under his teaching and love for music. She participates in the jazz band and has been a great experience and opportunity for her.

We've been so impressed with the caliber of teachers, their love of music and how they want the best for their students. LAAPA AND the staff have all been so supportive, encouraging and accessible all of the time. They've been a blessing to my daughter and to us! Would recommend them to anyone wanting to advance their child's love and gift of music!

EXCELLENT ACADEMY!!!! My daughter attended NOCCA in New Orleans for one year, but found the commute every day along with her studies was too much. So, we had to look very hard to try and find a music school that could compare to NOCCA and this music school fit perfectly and more! Our daughter loves to go every week and the teachers and staff are exemplary. We are very glad we found this music school!!!! Thank you very much!!!!
